旅居紐約的大提琴家陳南呈,熱愛與聽眾分享音樂。擁有美國茱莉亞音樂院學士和碩士學位,在校期間師從茱莉亞弦樂四重奏大提琴演奏家Joel Krosnick。經常受邀前往南美、北美及歐洲演出,曾一年有近百場的演出邀約,其中不乏於卡內基音樂廳、林肯中心等著名演出場地。近年演出獲得的各方好評包括:《華盛頓郵報》(Washington Post)“讓觀眾愉悅的傑出表演”、《紐約音樂會評論》(New York Concert Reviews)“優美的琴聲”以及麻州報紙(Worcester Telegram)“十年一見的精彩演出”等。 近年在台灣的演出包括參與2024年國立台灣交響樂團之開季音樂會與指揮家水藍演出布拉姆斯雙協奏曲,並於
2025年起由指揮家Jaap van Zweden任命為長榮交響樂團大提琴首席。
出生於台灣台中,陳南呈11歲起在台灣多項音樂比賽中獲獎無數,包括1999年台中市市賽大提琴及鋼琴組雙料冠軍,1999年全國音樂比賽音樂班組大提琴組第三名與鋼琴組入圍,及2004年台灣行天宮大提琴比賽第一名。12歲赴美攻讀大提琴演奏後,曾在 Queens Symphony Young Soloist Competition、Quincy Symphony Concerto competition、Chamber Music Society of Boston Competition 及 Metro-West Symphony Concerto Competition榮獲首獎,並在Concord Symphony Concerto Competition、New England Conservatory YPO Concerto Competition、Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition 中名列前茅。亦曾受邀參與歐洲知名的國際音樂比賽,包括匈牙利的International Casals Cello Competition及奧地利的Brahms International Strings Competition。
陳南呈的音樂學習始於台中光復國小音樂班,師事張正傑、陳俐亨和賴怡蓉等大提琴家。赴美後先後就讀於加州Idyllwild Arts Academy和麻州Walnut Hill School for the Arts,師事Eleonore Schoenfeld和Mark Churchill。在紐約求學期間,他進入The Juilliard School攻讀學士和碩士學位,並以全額獎學金進入CUNY Graduate Center攻讀博士學位,師事Joel Krosnick和Marcy Rosen,同時在此期間獲得美國頒發的傑出人才綠卡。 陳南呈擁有豐富的教學經驗,曾在多所學校擔任兼任師資,包括紐約市立大學皇后區分校之亞倫柯
普蘭音樂學院(Aaron Copland School of Music at CUNY Queens College), Feitian College, 和長島Manahaim音樂學院,指導學生學習大提琴和室內樂。除了在美國的教學經驗外,陳南呈也曾受邀至多所國際大學,包括Penn State University、University of Wisconsin、University of Calgary、University of Panama、國立臺灣師範大學和國立臺南藝術大學,擔任大師班的教學。在2019至2024期間,每年七月,陳南呈擔任奧地利Altenburger Musik Akademie音樂節的大提琴師資,為學生提供專業指導和豐富的音樂體
驗。
身為全職演奏家,陳南呈的演出足跡超過北美二十州,並遠及巴拿馬、巴拉圭、哥倫比亞等中南美國家。陳南呈曾與多個知名交響樂團合作演出協奏曲,包括Queens Symphony Orchestra、Symphony Pro Musica、Quincy Symphony Orchestra、Metro-West Symphony 等,更曾於委內瑞拉與國際知名的Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra 合作,在該國首演高難度的巴伯(Samuel Barber) 大提琴協奏曲,深獲好評。陳南呈也經常受邀於美國境內的知名音樂節中演出,包括波士頓胡桃山音樂節、Sarasota Festival、
Banff Center、Kneisel Hall、Heifetz International Music Festival、Philadelphia Young Pianists Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival及Chautauqua Music Festival, 這些音樂節提供了他展現才華和與其他音樂家交流的寶貴機會。此外,陳南呈曾在茱莉亞交響樂團、Sarasota Festival Orchestra、Bowdoin Festival Orchestra、Ensemble 212、Pagasus: The Orchestra及International Vienna Orchestra 等團擔任樂團首席。
陳南呈同時也是一位經驗豐富的室內樂演奏家。由陳南呈與好友們於2010年共同成立的《新亞室內樂協會》並擔任董事與執行總監,曾被具有足夠公信力的《紐約音樂會評論網》讚譽為「由一群極具專業、擁有極佳天賦的青年音樂家所組成的團體」。紮根在紐約的新亞室內樂協會(NACMS)致力於汲取偉大經典名曲中的精華與融合東西方文化的精粹,首張專輯《情繫心憶》紐約音樂會即獲得傳藝金曲獎的最佳編曲獎以及最佳錄音獎兩項入圍,並在2022年與2023年接連受邀至大都會球場與麥迪遜花園等NBA與MLB球賽擔任開場演出嘉賓。
除了演出傳統古典音樂,陳南呈也多次與知名的Peridance和Naini Chen(陳乃霓)現代舞團合作,激盪出多場令觀眾激賞的多媒體作品。其中與Peridance Contemporary Dance Company合作的作品Intimate Voices (1995),將於2023-24多次在紐約呈現。該舞蹈作品採用了多首巴哈所譜寫的大提琴無伴奏組曲。陳南呈亦曾與活躍於南北美的阿根廷裔手風琴家JP Jofre共同演出熱情奔放的探戈作品。2015年四月接受華盛頓芭蕾舞團的邀請,與知名芭蕾舞蹈家Misty Copeland於甘迺迪中心完成七場成功的演出。 近几年陳南呈常利用假期回台灣演出及教學:以獨奏家身分與國立台灣交響樂團合作,於台中中興堂及苗北藝文中心演出舒曼大提琴協奏曲,現場座無虛席;與台中古典管弦樂團合作,於同一場音樂會中演出兩首協奏曲:柴可夫斯基洛可可變奏曲和布拉姆斯雙協奏曲;與新亞室內樂協會在台北國家音樂廳及台中中山堂演出;在台中二中、台南藝術大學及台北國立師範大學等音樂系舉辦大師講座,分享經驗。於國立台灣交響樂團2017暑期青少年音樂營擔任教師和演出。同年十月與台北市立交響樂團附設室內樂團(TSO Chamber Orchestra) 合作演出洛可可變奏曲。2024再度受邀國立台灣交響樂團暑期青少年音樂營擔任獨奏,演出德佛札克大提琴協奏曲,於台灣和泰國演出並進行文化交流。
Chen Nan-Cheng
Cellist Chen Nan-Cheng, currently based in New York, is passionate about sharing music with audiences. He holds both bachelor's and master's degrees from The Juilliard School, where he studied under Joel Krosnick, the cellist of the Juilliard String Quartet. He has been invited to perform frequently in South America, North America, and Europe, with nearly 100 performance invitations in a single year at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center. In recent years, his performances have garnered praise from outlets like the Washington Post ("a delightful and outstanding performance"), New York Concert Reviews ("beautiful tone"), and the Worcester Telegram ("a once-in-a-decade performance").
Recent performances in Taiwan include the 2024 season-opening concert of the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, where he played Brahms’ Double Concerto under conductor Shui Lan. Beginning in 2025, he was appointed principal cellist of the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra by conductor Jaap van Zweden.
Born in Taichung, Taiwan, Chen began winning numerous competitions from age 11, including double first prizes in both cello and piano in the 1999 Taichung City Competition, third place in cello and finalist in piano at the National Student Music Competition, and first place in the 2004 Hsing Tien Kong Cello Competition. He moved to the U.S. at age 12 to study cello performance and has since won first prizes in competitions such as the Queens Symphony Young Soloist Competition, Quincy Symphony Concerto Competition, Chamber Music Society of Boston Competition, and Metro-West Symphony Concerto Competition. He also placed highly in the Concord Symphony Concerto Competition, New England Conservatory YPO Concerto Competition, and Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and was invited to international competitions in Hungary (International Casals Cello Competition) and Austria (Brahms International Strings Competition).
His musical journey began at Guangfu Elementary School’s music program in Taichung, studying with Zhang Zheng-Jie, Chen Li-Heng, and Lai Yi-Rong. After moving to the U.S., he attended Idyllwild Arts Academy (CA) and Walnut Hill School for the Arts (MA), studying with Eleonore Schoenfeld and Mark Churchill. He later earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at The Juilliard School, and pursued a doctorate at CUNY Graduate Center on a full scholarship, studying with Joel Krosnick and Marcy Rosen. During this time, he received a U.S. green card for extraordinary ability.
Chen has extensive teaching experience, having served as adjunct faculty at Aaron Copland School of Music (CUNY Queens College), Feitian College, and the Manahaim School of Music (Long Island), teaching cello and chamber music. He has given masterclasses at institutions such as Penn State University, University of Wisconsin, University of Calgary, University of Panama, National Taiwan Normal University, and Tainan National University of the Arts. From 2019 to 2024, he taught cello every July at the Altenburger Musik Akademie in Austria.
As a full-time performer, Chen has performed across 20 U.S. states and in Panama, Paraguay, and Colombia. He has collaborated with many orchestras, including Queens Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Pro Musica, Quincy Symphony Orchestra, and Metro-West Symphony. In Venezuela, he performed Samuel Barber’s demanding Cello Concerto with the world-renowned Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra to critical acclaim.
He has also been featured at major U.S. music festivals, including Walnut Hill, Sarasota Festival, Banff Centre, Kneisel Hall, Heifetz International Music Festival, Philadelphia Young Pianists Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, and Chautauqua Music Festival. He has served as principal cellist for ensembles such as Juilliard Orchestra, Sarasota Festival Orchestra, Bowdoin Festival Orchestra, Ensemble 212, Pegasus: The Orchestra, and the International Vienna Orchestra.
Chen is also an experienced chamber musician. In 2010, he co-founded the New Asia Chamber Music Society (NACMS), serving as board member and executive director. New York Concert Review described the ensemble as "a group of highly talented and professional young musicians." Based in New York, NACMS draws on classical masterpieces while integrating East-West cultural elements. Their debut album Remembrance earned nominations for Best Arrangement and Best Recording at the Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music. In 2022 and 2023, they were invited to perform at major sporting events at Citi Field and Madison Square Garden.
Chen has also collaborated with contemporary dance groups such as Peridance and the Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company, producing multimedia works that have been enthusiastically received. One such collaboration, Intimate Voices (1995), based on Bach’s cello suites, was performed multiple times in NYC in 2023–24. He also performed fiery tango works with Argentinian bandoneonist JP Jofre. In April 2015, he performed with ballerina Misty Copeland in seven sold-out shows at the Kennedy Center, invited by The Washington Ballet.
In recent years, Chen has returned to Taiwan to perform and teach during breaks. He played Schumann’s Cello Concerto with the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (NTSO) to a packed audience, and performed both Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations and Brahms’ Double Concerto with the Taichung Philharmonic. He has also performed with NACMS at Taipei National Concert Hall and Taichung Zhongshan Hall, and given masterclasses at Taichung Second Senior High School, Tainan National University of the Arts, and National Taiwan Normal University. He taught and performed at NTSO’s 2017 Summer Youth Music Camp and performed Rococo Variations with the TSO Chamber Orchestra in October of the same year. In 2024, he was again invited to perform with the NTSO’s youth camp, playing Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in Taiwan and Thailand as part of a cultural exchange tour.
