The *New York Times* has described the work of Taiwanese-American composer Tzu-Ling Chou as “modern and edgy,” while the *Birmingham News* called her “a persuasive composer.” She has collaborated with ensembles and artists such as the Boston Brass, the Pacifica String Quartet, flutist Demarre McGill, and pianist Jenny Lin. Her compositions have been performed in the United States, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Spain, China, and Taiwan.
Since her student days, Chou has stood out in numerous composition competitions. In 2002, her flute concerto *Unbound* won First Prize in the Young Composer Awards presented by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP). She has also received the International Alliance for Women in Music composition award, was commissioned by the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) as a commissioned composer, and served as composer-in-residence at the Banff Music Centre in Canada.
Born in Taichung, Taiwan, Chou studied under Professor Hsu Tsang-Houei (金希文) during secondary school. After high school, she moved to New York to pursue advanced studies at The Juilliard School, where she studied composition with Samuel Adler and became the school’s first Taiwanese composition major. Upon graduation, she received Juilliard’s highest composition honor, the Palmer Dixon Prize. She then received a full scholarship to pursue her master’s degree at the University of Chicago and earned her Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) from the Eastman School of Music in 2009.
From 2008 to 2013, she served as Assistant Professor and Graduate Program Director at Samford University.
